The World's Best Euro Nymphing Rod?? Thomas & Thomas Contact III+
The Thomas & Thomas Contact series has long been considered one of the gold standards in euro nymphing rods, and with the release of the Contact III +, they’ve raised the bar once again.

Coming into this launch, expectations were already sky-high. The previous generation was a proven performer, trusted by competitive anglers and serious trout fishermen alike. But after getting hands-on with the new Contact III +, it’s clear that this isn’t just a minor update, this is a huge step forward in performance.

Dual Tip System: Two Rods in One

The standout feature of the Contact III+ is its dual tip system, giving anglers two distinct rod actions in a single setup.

Hollow Tip (Standard):
  • A more traditional construction that offers added strength and stiffness. Ideal for larger flies, heavier tippet, and applications like steelhead or light streamer work.

Solid Graphite Tip:
  • A much thinner, softer tip section designed for maximum sensitivity and control. Perfect for fishing small beads, light leaders, and technical presentations, where finesse is everything.

This system doesn’t just provide a backup tip, it gives anglers the ability to adapt their rod to different techniques and conditions, effectively turning one rod into two specialized tools.

Improved Line Control with Micro Guides

Another major upgrade comes in the form of refined guide spacing and micro guide design.

The Contact III+ features:
  • More guides along the blank to reduce line sag
  • Ultra-light single foot micro guides for better line management
  • A strategically placed snake guide near the tip to minimize line wrap issues

The result is a noticeably tighter connection from hand to fly, improving strike detection and overall control, two of the most critical elements in euro nymphing.

Optimized for Performance and Versatility

Rod lengths like the 10’9” and 11’5” are built as dedicated euro nymphing tools, equipped with ultra-fine guides to manage thin leaders with precision.

Meanwhile, the shorter 10’ models (2wt and 3wt) feature slightly larger guides, allowing anglers to:

  • Run a traditional fly line if needed
  • Mix in light dry fly fishing

While not designed as primary dry fly rods, this added flexibility is a welcome bonus for anglers who want more range from a single setup.

Lower Stripping Guide = Better Feel

One subtle but impactful upgrade is the lower placement of the stripping guide, something we noticed as soon as we pulled these rods out.

Compared to previous generations, this brings the first guide closer to the hand, which:

  • Reduces line sag even further
  • Improves direct contact with the fly
  • Enhances sensitivity and strike detection

It’s a small change on paper, but on the water, it makes a noticeable difference.

Built to Stay Solid

T&T also addressed one of the few minor complaints from previous models by adding double locking nuts on the reel seat.

This ensures:

  • A more secure reel connection
  • Less loosening over a full day of fishing
  • Greater overall confidence in your setup

It’s a simple upgrade, but one that speaks to the thoughtful refinement behind this rod.

Improved Repair Program

Euro rods are super thin and lightweight rods, and like it or not it comes with the territory that bead headed flies hitting and cracking rod tips can happen to anyone. That's why T&T introduced a new program to expedite rod repairs, eliminating the need to send these rods into T&T to be repaired! With the new system, after providing some details to T&T they can send a replacement section directly to you (or us at the shop). This is going to drastically reduce repair wait times and costs for broken tips!

Final Thoughts

The Contact III + isn’t just an update, it’s a serious evolution of an already legendary rod. With its dual tip system, improved guide layout, and refined hardware, it offers a level of performance and adaptability that’s hard to match in the euro nymphing world.

Whether you’re a competitive angler or simply looking to elevate your tight-line game, this rod delivers on every front.
