Can You Fish Steelhead This Weekend? - Southern Ontario Steelhead Fishing Forecast April 1st
The short answer: yes, you can absolutely fish steelhead this weekend!

After a heavy round of rain, nearly 30 mm monday night, many anglers are wondering whether conditions will be blown out. While some of the larger river systems are currently running high and muddy, the overall outlook is very positive, especially as we move toward the weekend.

River Conditions: Small Creeks Leading the Way

Right now, larger rivers are still dealing with the full impact of the rainfall. Systems like the Credit River and Humber River are high and carrying significant colour due to their size and drainage.

However, many smaller rivers are already cresting and starting to drop. That’s exactly what anglers want to see.

As water levels fall over the next couple of days, these smaller systems will:
  • Clear quickly
  • Hold fresh, incoming fish
  • Offer ideal “steelhead green” conditions

Some creeks could be fishable as early as Thursday, with excellent opportunities expected by the weekend.

Weather Outlook: Quick Recovery Expected

There is a bit more rain in the forecast, but totals look relatively minor compared to what we just received. With cooler, stable conditions following, rivers should continue to flush and improve steadily.

For most systems in the Toronto area, we’re not looking at a long recovery window, just a matter of a few days before things come back into shape.

April Means Sucker Spawn

As we move into April, one of the most important seasonal food sources begins to dominate: sucker spawn.

Suckers enter rivers in massive numbers and spawn alongside steelhead, releasing large quantities of eggs into the system. This creates a key feeding opportunity that steelhead take full advantage of.

The most important detail here is colour and size:

  • Pale yellow to light orange tones are highly effective
  • Smaller egg patterns often outperform larger ones
  • Subtle, natural presentations become increasingly important as water clears

Best Fly Patterns Right Now

With improving clarity and seasonal changes, your fly selection should evolve accordingly:

Key Producers:
  • Sucker spawn eggs (pale yellow, washed-out orange)
  • Small egg patterns in natural tones
  • Smaller nymphs as water clears
  • White baitfish patterns (1–2 inches)

This is also the time of year when juvenile baitfish (including young salmon) begin to appear, making small white streamers a highly effective option. These can be fished either under an indicator or swung through runs.

Timing It Right

The window after a big rain can be one of the best times to fish, if you time it properly.

  • Too early: rivers are high, muddy, and tough to fish
  • Just right: dropping water, good color, fresh fish moving in
  • Too late: low, clear, and more technical

This weekend is shaping up to hit that ideal middle window, especially on smaller systems.
