Spring Steelhead Ontario Fishing Forecast - April 8th
Spring fishing is back in a big way across southern Ontario, and this weekend is shaping up to offer some of the best steelhead conditions we’ve seen in weeks.

After a long weekend that brought heavy rain, colder temperatures, and higher water, rivers are now settling. While many anglers still found success in the high water, conditions are improving quickly, and the timing couldn’t be better.

River Conditions: Dropping, Clearing, and Setting Up Perfectly

Following last weekend’s rain, most rivers ran high and off-color. However, as the week progresses, water levels are steadily dropping and clarity is improving.

A small amount of additional rain (around 5–10 mm) is expected Friday morning, but this should actually work in our favour. With a full day to settle before the weekend, many rivers should hit that ideal balance of:

  • Slight stain (perfect “steelhead green”)
  • Stable, fishable flows
  • Fresh fish continuing to move in

Some systems like the Humber River may remain muddy due to their silty nature, but many others should be in great shape.

Mid-sized rivers like the Credit River could be borderline depending on final flows, but are definitely worth watching.

Weather Outlook: Classic Spring Fishing Weather

The forecast is calling warmer temperatures this weekend, making for comfortable days on the water.

Combined with light rain earlier in the week and improving river conditions, this sets up a classic spring scenario:

  • Good water levels
  • Slight colour in the rivers
  • Active, aggressive fish

In short, exactly what you want for steelhead fishing.

Why Slightly Stained Water Is Ideal

A bit of colour in the water is often a major advantage this time of year.

  • Fish are less spooky
  • They’re more willing to move and eat
  • Visibility is reduced just enough to give anglers an edge

With current conditions pointing toward lightly stained water, expect fish to be more aggressive and more forgiving than in low, clear flows.

Best Fly Patterns for This Weekend

Fly selection should match water clarity and river type:

In Slightly Stained Water:
  • Chartreuse egg patterns (excellent visibility)
  • Pink and red worms
  • Larger, high-contrast presentations
In Clearer Systems (Smaller Tributaries):
  • Yellow sucker spawn eggs
  • Smaller, natural egg patterns
  • Subtle presentations as clarity improves

With sucker activity increasing, pale yellow and washed-out tones are becoming increasingly important across many rivers.

Bonus Opportunity: Niagara River

The Niagara River is another strong option heading into the weekend.

While it has been somewhat murky this spring due to prevailing west winds, the forecast is shifting toward north and east winds, which typically help improve water clarity.

If conditions line up, the Niagara can offer excellent spring fishing, but always remember to exercise caution when fishing it.

Get Out There!

With improving river conditions, ideal spring weather, and fish actively moving through the systems, this weekend is shaping up to be a great opportunity to get out.
