For those who may not be familiar with Sitka, the company has long been known for making high-performance hunting gear. Sitka is owned by Gore, so there’s a pretty direct connection to the Gore-Tex technology used in these waders. Sitka has spent years developing highly durable gear for demanding environments, and they’re now bringing that experience into the fishing world.
We’ve already had some great feedback from our own team. Rob, our shop owner, has been wearing Sitka gear for well over a decade and has had excellent results with it. The Crosscurrent line brings a lot of that same emphasis on durability, thoughtful construction and performance to a purpose-built fishing wader and boot.
Sitka Crosscurrent GTX Zip Front Waders
The Crosscurrent GTX Zip Front Waders are built from four-layer Gore-Tex fabric, with a feature set that makes them particularly well suited to serious anglers who spend long days on the water.
Starting at the top, you have air-mesh suspenders designed to improve airflow while providing a little additional padding across the shoulders. They also conform nicely to your body and help distribute the weight of the waders and whatever you’re carrying more evenly than a traditional neoprene-style suspender strap.
The suspension system also has a very slick adjustment setup, with a hook-and-loop closure and a way to tuck away the excess strap material. It keeps everything neat and out of your way rather than leaving loose straps hanging around your chest.
Waterproof Front Zipper
Of course, one of the biggest features is the YKK waterproof front zipper.
If you haven’t worn a zip-front wader before, waterproof zippers can seem like something to be cautious about. In our experience, though, they have an excellent track record. We’ve been selling waders for well over a decade, and waterproof zipper failures are exceptionally uncommon. In fact, they will most likely outlast the rest of the wader!
And once you’ve spent some time in a zip-front wader, it’s hard to give them up.
The convenience is especially noticeable in colder weather. If you’re wearing multiple layers underneath, being able to open the zipper and adjust your clothing throughout the day without having to completely remove your waders is a huge luxury. It also makes getting in and out of the waders considerably easier.
Pockets and On-Water Features
The Crosscurrent waders have several other well-thought-out details.
There are large side hand pockets for keeping your hands warm or storing a few essentials, along with a zippered chest pocket on one side. On the other side is a magnetic-closure pocket, which gives you a very quick way to get in and out when you need something without having to fuss with a zipper.
There’s also a low-profile forceps clip built into the chest area. Sitka has gone a little further than simply sewing a tab onto the wader. The clip is designed so that your forceps or hemostats sit flush against the fabric rather than sticking out and catching on things as you move around.
The belt loops are similarly low profile. They keep the wading belt tucked close to the body, reducing another potential snag point when you’re moving through brush or around the boat.
The belt itself has some stretch to it, making it easy to cinch down securely while remaining comfortable throughout the day.
Built-In Knee Pad Compatibility
One particularly interesting detail is found on the inside of the knees.
The Crosscurrent waders have dedicated slots designed to accommodate Sitka’s optional knee pads.
Gravel Guards and Booties
Moving down the waders, the gravel guards use a stretchy material that hugs the top of your wading boot. This helps keep gravel, sand and other debris from finding its way inside.
There’s also a mesh section on the back of the gravel guard. That allows water to drain more readily, helping keep things lighter as you move through the river.
At the bottom are anatomically shaped 5 mm neoprene booties. The thicker neoprene adds durability in an area that sees plenty of abuse while also providing the structure and insulation you expect from a high-quality wader bootie.
Pay Attention to Sizing
One thing we really want to emphasize with these waders is sizing.
Sitka’s fit is a little different from what you might be accustomed to with other wader brands, and we find that the Crosscurrent waders run on the slimmer side.
In fact, the staff here have generally gone up an additional size from what we would normally choose, even when comparing ourselves against the sizing information on Sitka’s website.
Because wader sizing is about more than just waist and inseam measurements, we strongly recommend coming into the shop if you can. We can help you try them on and make sure you have enough room to move comfortably and layer appropriately.
If you can’t make it into the shop, give us a call and we can walk through the sizing with you. Getting the right fit is particularly important with a technical wader like this. You want enough room to move freely and layer underneath without ending up with excess material that gets in the way.
Sitka Crosscurrent Boots
The Crosscurrent Boots are designed to pair naturally with the Crosscurrent waders, and they take a similar approach to balancing durability with a relatively lightweight, walkable design.
The upper uses a woven fabric that doesn't hold onto a lot of water and drains quickly. That helps keep the boots lighter as you're moving through the river or walking long distances between spots.
Sitka has also minimized the amount of stitching used throughout the boot. Instead, you'll find a number of molded components and TPU-welded construction, reducing potential failure points and adding durability without simply piling on more material.
The toe and heel have substantial molded protective caps in these high-abuse areas, giving the boot some extra protection when you're scrambling over rocks or moving through rough terrain.
Designed for Walking
One of the things we really like about the Crosscurrent boot is its shape.
The sole has a noticeable rocker through it, giving the boot a more natural stride. Rather than feeling like you're walking around on a flat, rigid plank, the curved profile helps the boot roll with your foot as you walk.
That's particularly useful if you're covering a lot of ground. For anglers who spend an entire day hiking between pools or walking significant distances to reach their fishing spots, having a boot that feels natural underfoot can make a big difference.
There's also a large pull loop on the back to make getting the boots on and off easier.
Deep Lugs and Included Cleats
Underneath, the Crosscurrent has a deep, aggressive tread pattern designed to provide substantial grip on its own.
Those deep lugs are particularly useful in mud and soft river bottoms, where they can dig into the surface and provide traction without relying entirely on studs.
But Sitka has also built in threaded inserts for adding cleats, and this is where the Crosscurrent boots offer some excellent value.
Two complete sets of cleats are included with the boots.
You get one set made from a softer TPU-style material and another set of aluminum cleats, allowing you to choose the type of traction that makes the most sense for where you're fishing.
The cleats screw directly into the molded inserts using an Allen key, rather than requiring you to screw directly into the boot itself. That means you can install and remove them as needed without repeatedly damaging the sole.
There are 10 cleat positions per boot, giving you plenty of coverage across the sole.
Considering that a single aftermarket set of cleats can easily cost $50 or more, having both the soft and metal sets included with the boots represents a substantial amount of added value.
A Complete System
The Crosscurrent GTX Zip Front Waders and Crosscurrent Boots make a very natural pairing. The waders bring Gore-Tex construction, a waterproof front zipper, thoughtful storage and a number of low-profile details designed around moving efficiently on the water.
The boots complement that with a lightweight, walkable design, durable molded construction, deep lugs and a versatile cleat system that gives you two traction options right out of the box.
