Your fly rod is the foundation of your entire outfit, and for most anglers it's where you'll notice the biggest difference on the water.

For indicator nymphing, we recommend a 10-foot 7-weight as the ideal all-around choice for Ontario Steelhead rivers. The extra length makes it easier to mend line, control longer drifts and keep more fly line off the water, while a 7-weight provides plenty of power for casting weighted rigs and fighting strong fish.

An 8-weight can be a good choice for anglers regularly fishing larger rivers, heavier flows or larger flies, but for most situations a quality 7-weight offers the best balance of performance and versatility.

Unlike trout fishing, Steelhead are capable of long, powerful runs, making a reliable reel an important part of your setup.

Look for a large-arbour reel with a smooth, dependable drag and enough backing capacity for larger fish. More importantly, choose a reel that balances comfortably with your rod. A well-balanced outfit is less fatiguing to fish and provides better control throughout the day.

One of the best things about indicator fishing is its simplicity.

For indicator fishing, a weight-forward floating fly line is all you need. Floating lines cast indicators efficiently, mend easily and allow you to make long, controlled drifts through productive water.

Unlike swinging techniques, there's no need for sink-tip systems. A quality floating line paired with the appropriate leader and split shot will handle almost every situation. Indicator designed fly lines like those featured below will most easily cast heavy indicators and control your drift, however standard floating fly lines will work too.

Your leader connects everything together and plays a key role in achieving a natural drift.

A 10-12lb tapered leader paired with 2X to 4X fluorocarbon tippet is a versatile starting point for most Ontario Steelhead fishing. Fluorocarbon sinks more readily than nylon, is highly abrasion resistant and is less visible underwater, making it a popular choice among Steelhead anglers.

Don't worry about finding the "perfect" leader. Small adjustments in tippet size and length to match water clarity and fly size are far more important than buying dozens of different leader formulas.

DRIFT RECOMMENDS:

The indicator suspends your flies at the correct depth while providing a visual cue when a fish takes. Split shot allows you to adjust how quickly your flies reach the strike zone, and changing the amount of weight is often the quickest way to improve your presentation.

Carry a selection of indicator sizes and split shot so you can easily adapt to changing water depth and current speed throughout the day.

When it comes to indicator fishing, presentation almost always matters more than having hundreds of different fly patterns.

Start with a small selection of proven flies that cover the situations you'll encounter most often. Egg patterns remain a staple throughout the Steelhead season and are commonly paired with stoneflies, attractor nymphs or other natural patterns.

Rather than filling your fly box with every pattern available, focus on learning when and where to fish a handful of confidence flies well.

Comfort and safety become increasingly important as Steelhead season progresses.

Breathable chest waders allow you to fish comfortably across a wide range of temperatures, while quality wading boots provide the traction and support needed for uneven river bottoms.

Investing in dependable wading gear means you'll spend more time focusing on fishing and less time worrying about the conditions under your feet.
