The G3 Guide Series has long been known for its durability, and Simms has taken things a step further with this latest generation. The biggest change is a new Gore-Tex Pro fabric package designed to improve resistance to the kind of damage that causes most waders to leak in the first place: pinholes and small punctures from thorns, sticks and sharp brush.
According to Simms, the new material offers 64% greater resistance to pinhole punctures and approximately 50% greater resistance to larger punctures. Rather than simply building a heavier wader, the goal is to improve durability where it matters most while maintaining comfort and breathability.
As before, the construction uses a heavier four-layer fabric through the lower legs, where abrasion and puncture resistance are especially important, and a lighter three-layer fabric through the upper body, where breathability and comfort take priority. It’s a practical combination for anglers who spend long days moving through rough terrain.
Introducing the G3Z Pro: A Zip-Front G3
One of the biggest additions is the G3Z Pro, the first G3 wader to feature a front zipper. If you’ve spent much time in waders, you already know how convenient a zip-front design can be, particularly when layering up for cold-weather fishing or taking a quick break on the river.
The long waterproof zipper makes getting in and out of the waders much easier, while the familiar G3 features remain in place, including hand-warmer pockets and front storage.
The G3Z Pro also creates an interesting option within the Simms lineup. It sits between the Freestone Z and the higher-end G4Z, giving anglers another choice if they want the convenience of a zip-front wader without stepping up to the G4 series.
I’ve been wearing an early pair over the past couple of weeks, and the overall feel has been excellent. The zipper is a welcome addition, but some of the less obvious changes to the fit and suspension system are just as interesting.
A Better Fit Through the Suspenders
Both models feature updated air-mesh suspenders designed to improve airflow and sit more comfortably across the shoulders. The material conforms to the body to help distribute the weight of the waders and reduce uncomfortable bunching.
There’s also a clever elastic section where the suspender straps attach at the back. This automatically gathers excess material when you’re wearing fewer layers, helping keep the fit tidy during warmer weather. When temperatures drop and you add extra layers underneath, the elastic expands to accommodate the additional bulk.
The suspenders are convertible, too. Similar to the system found on the G4 series, you can adjust the attachment points to shorten the straps and keep the upper section securely in place, or lower them toward mid-chest when you want to open things up and get some airflow.
These adjustments might seem like small details, but they make a difference when you’re wearing waders for hours at a time across changing seasons.
The Details That Matter on the Water
Down at the legs, Simms has retained its anatomically designed neoprene booties. This is an underrated feature of Simms waders, helping the material fit naturally inside your boots rather than bunching or rolling underfoot.
The gravel guards are also designed to fit closely around your boots, creating a streamlined profile while providing resistance to scuffs and abrasion. It’s another practical detail for anglers who regularly cover ground in rough conditions.
Taken together, the new fabric, improved suspension system and thoughtful construction updates make this a substantial refresh of the G3 lineup.
