Introducing the Rio MDC Scandi Kit – The Next Generation of All-Purpose Steelhead & Salmon Spey Lines
We’re excited to announce that the Rio MDC Scandi Kits have officially landed at Drift! These kits build on the long-standing success of Rio’s Scandi VersiTip system, one of our all-time favorite setups for steelhead and salmon fishing. Designed for versatility, consistency, and smooth casting, the MDC Scandi takes everything anglers loved about the VersiTip and refines it with modern coatings, improved tapers, and a full out-of-the-box package ready to fish.

What’s in the Kit

Each RIO MDC Scandi Kit comes with everything you need, minus backing, to get on the water.Inside, you’ll find:
  • A Rio SlickShooter monofilament running line
  • An Elite Scandi Body Head, designed for effortless casting and delicate presentation.
  • A selection of interchangeable tips in multiple sink rates, giving you control over depth and presentation.
Simply attach the kit to your backing, rig up your rod, and you’re ready to swing flies. It’s a full, balanced setup right out of the box, perfect for anglers who want to streamline their system without sacrificing performance.

New Features & Upgrades

What sets the MDC apart from older VersiTip designs is RIO’s Elite Series coating technology. This latest generation coating offers improved slickness, better durability, and smoother shooting. The kit’s tips now feature a graduated-density construction, meaning each tip transitions progressively in density from end to end. This creates a smoother turnover and easier pickup as the back end won't be sunk as deep, making the line easy to lift.

RIO built the MDC system around the principle of consistency. Each included tip has the same weight and length, ensuring the total grain weight and anchor placement feel identical across the kit. That means no more adjusting your stroke when you change tips, every cast feels the same, and your anchor hits the same spot.

Why It Matters: Consistent Taper and True Scandi Feel

Traditional Scandi setups often lose balance when you add aftermarket Poly Leaders or tips. Those add-ons change both the length and weight of the system, creating inconsistency between casts and presentations. The MDC Scandi solves that by designing the head and tips to function as a single, complete taper.

The slightly shortened Scandi body is calibrated to finish perfectly with the included tips, maintaining the true Scandi profile. The result? You get seamless energy transfer, consistent anchor placement, and identical grain weights across all sink options. Whether you’re fishing an intermediate or fast-sinking tip, your casting stroke remains unchanged, a major advantage for anglers who value precision and feel.

On-Water Performance

The MDC Scandi has enough punch to handle your average steelhead fly, from small intruders and hobo speys to lightly weighted patterns, while still preserving the smooth presentation Scandi heads are known for. It’s not designed for heavy dumbbell-eyed patterns, but for most Great Lakes and Pacific Northwest swing scenarios, it’s spot-on.

With an aggressive front taper, the MDC can turn over flies cleanly even in wind. At the same time, it offers the finesse needed for slow runs, small flies, and technical presentations. Available in short and long versions, the kit accommodates different rod lengths:
  • Short version: Ideal for rods below 13'
  • Long version: Suited for 13–15' rods.

Choosing the Right Setup

Each kit is labeled with grain weights to help match it to your rod and casting style. If you’re unsure which one to pick, our team at Drift has extensive hands-on experience fishing these systems and can help you find the perfect match for your setup.
