We’ve got a hot weekend ahead—and a hot start to bass season! Zone 17 bass opener is here, covering the Kawarthas and surrounding lakes/rivers in southeastern Ontario. Whether you’re casting from a canoe, wading a quiet back bay, or launching a boat, it’s time to get after it!
Trout Outlook: Fish Early, Rest Often
Trout fishing is becoming more temperature-dependent as summer heat rolls in, there are still some opportunities but make sure to check temperatures frequently and know when to call things if it gets too hot. Look for either really shaded small rivers, or tailwater fisheries like the Upper Grand River which will stay cooler longer.
🌡️ Sunday’s forecast is pushing 35°C, so:
- Check water temps regularly—carry a thermometer!
- 68°F (20°C) is the general ethical cutoff. Anything higher can prevent safe fish recovery after release.
- If you go, fish early mornings only.
🔍 Where to Look:
- Grand River (above Fergus) – near Shand Dam where cold water flows in.
- Credit River – short morning windows may be possible.
- Small Georgian Bay tributaries – shaded, canopy-covered streams may offer slightly cooler water.
- Fish heavier tippet, land fish quickly, and skip the photos this time of year to protect the trout!
Bass Season Begins in Zone 17!
Welcome back, bass lovers! Zone 17 (Kawartha Lakes and more) is open and ready for you.
What You Need to Know:
- Post-spawn bass are still lingering in shallow water, especially after this warm spring.
- Avoid nests if you happen to see them (light, cleared patches in the shallows).
- Most bass are now off the beds and ready to eat.
What to Throw:
- Crayfish-style flies like the Dead Ned—great for bottom-crawling action.
- Topwater flies are a blast right now
- Try a MFC Bombshell Popper for that big eat.
- In quiet, glassy bays, a buggy foam fly like the Rio Soft Chew is a softer touch that won’t spook fish.
- Don’t feel limited to big lakes. There are great walk-and-wade or canoe-accessible rivers and smaller lakes throughout the region.
