Southern Ontario Fishing Forecast for June 4th!
We’re heading into a sunny, warm weekend, and it’s shaping up to be a stellar one for fishing across the board. Whether you’re chasing trout, pike, musky, or something more offbeat like gar or bowfin—now’s the time to get out there.

Trout Fishing: Prime Time

  • Stable Weather = Strong Fishing
  • Last weekend’s cold front may have made trout a little sluggish, but this weekend brings stable conditions and warm temps—perfect for dry fly fishing.

Peak Dry Fly Season

It doesn’t get much better than this! Expect to see:

  • Sulphurs (tail end)
  • Gray Foxes (aka march browns) – larger mayflies that are a blast to fish
  • Caddis
  • Green Drakes (sporadic but worth looking for)
  • Stoneflies – beginning to show up; excellent for prospecting
On the Credit River, you might see several of these bugs in play. Big stoneflies in particular are fun to fish—just cast and cover water, and big trout will often move for them.

Nymphing Tips
As water warms, trout metabolism ramps up. Target:

  • Pocket water
  • Heads of pools
  • Shallow riffles—don’t ignore them; trout will push into these areas to feed
Go heavier with your flies to get into the strike zone.

Pike Report

Still going strong!

  • Fish have moved off the shallow post-spawn flats.
  • Focus on first weed lines in 10–15 ft of water.
  • Look for green weed beds—that’s where they’ll be.
  • Sink tips or full sinking lines (Type 3 to Type 5) are key to staying in the zone.

Musky Season Opens!

It’s opening weekend for musky, and early season tactics are in full effect:

  • Fish are still fairly shallow—think weeded bays and warm water (<10 ft).
  • Smaller flies (6–8") tend to work best right now, like Jake’s Pike Bait.
  • Big musky flies (12–14") will come later; early season is all about bite-sized snacks.

Bonus Species: Gar & Bowfin

Don’t overlook these prehistoric oddballs—they make for incredible fun.

Where to Find Them:
  • Warm, shallow, mucky bays
  • Georgian Bay, Kawarthas, Muskoka lakes

Fly Suggestions:
  • Gar – small baitfish patterns with a small trailing treble hook to stick their beaks
  • Bowfin – crayfish or buggy patterns
  • Both can be fished with your pike/musky setup (8–9wt rods).
