We’re looking ahead to another beautiful weekend, and the fishing continues to heat up! Musky season opened in Southern Ontario last weekend, and we’re already hearing some great stories. Pike is steady, trout is excellent, and carp is really turning on. Let’s break it all down:
Trout Report: In Prime Shape
Trout fishing is still excellent right now, water temps are in the low 60s°F—in their ideal range. Bring a thermometer on hotter days to be safe, but most of this week looks moderate (high teens to low 20s°C) which should keep water temps in a good range. Trout are moving into faster, oxygen-rich water, make sure to target:
- Heads of pools
- Pocket water
- Turbulent runs
If you’re fishing the Credit River, here’s what’s on the menu:
- Yellow Sallies (small, ~size 14)
- Golden Stones (large, ~size 8–10)
- Grey Foxes – size 12, brownish mayflies
- Iso's (Isonychia) – just starting to show
- Sulphurs – lingering in some stretches
On the Grand:
- Caddis – a reliable go-to anywhere on the system
- Brown Drakes – in the lower reaches
- Midges – in the top end of the system
Pack lots of caddis patterns—they’re your can’t-miss bug right now.
Pike Update
Pike fishing is still going strong, but we’re moving into summer mode:
- Target 8–15 ft depth range
- Look for green weed beds or fallen trees over deeper water
- Sinking lines are key to staying in the strike zone:
- Type 3–5 for most situations
- Type 7 if you want to fish deeper and faster
Musky Report: Post-Spawn Season Begins
We had a great musky opener, and the season is just getting started.
Fish are post-spawn, so focus on:
- Shallow weedy bays
- Creek mouths
- Water anywhere from 0–15 ft
- Just like with pike—green weeds are your best bet.
Carp Report: Great Lakes Are Turning On
We’ve been hyping it for a while, and it’s here: carp fishing on the Great Lakes is heating up. Early season was more about rivers and small warm lakes, but now, larger, colder systems (like Lake Ontario, Erie, Simcoe) are warming up and carp are moving into the shallows to feed.
Flies:
- Sculpin flies
- Crayfish patterns
- General nymphs
