From Richard of Slipstream Angling:

$4,500 USD Summer River Dry Fly Season July 12 - August 29, 2026
$5,000 USD Fall Season August 30 to October 3, 2026

Summer and fall trout trips often conjure up images of heading to the Western U.S. to get your trout fix. And rightly so—given the long-standing history, tradition, and quality of trout fishing found in places like Montana and Idaho. However, with the rather complex political situation south of the border these days and the recent challenges associated with traveling there, more and more Canadians are looking north for their next great trout adventure.

If you’re thinking about a western-style trout trip in the summer or fall of 2026, Northern Lights Lodge in northern British Columbia is an excellent option that checks all the boxes. This is a classic old-world trout lodge with all the modern amenities that traveling anglers have come to expect. It’s situated on the thickly forested shores of Quesnel Lake, one of the most beautiful and pristine bodies of water in the province. The lodge itself is extremely comfortable, with a timeless, old-school feel that’s hard not to appreciate. Each angler has a private room and shares a bathroom with one adjoining guest. The rooms are wrapped around the main lodge, and each features an outdoor sitting area overlooking beautiful Quesnel Lake.

Northern Lights Lodge is a very well-run operation that delivers on every level. The rainbow trout fishing is outstanding, and during the summer months, the focus is firmly on dry-fly fishing. Guests spend their days fishing from drift boats and jet boats on two of the region’s signature rivers—the Horsefly and Mitchell. Both are stunning waterways offering incredible scenery and healthy populations of fat, willing rainbows. In the fall, the focus shifts to targeting large rainbow and bull trout that move in from the lakes to feed on spawning salmon eggs—a spectacular opportunity for anglers who enjoy sight-fishing for powerful, aggressive fish.
At less than half the price of many comparable Alaska operations, Northern Lights Lodge is easy to reach and represents excellent value for money. A big thumbs-up for this British Columbia gem."

Fly Rods for Northern Lights Lodge

A 5-6wt rod will be your go-to dry fly fishing and general trout rod on this trip, however a second rod in the 7-8wt class is recommended for streamer fishing & bull trout.

Fly Reels for Northern Lights Lodge

Reels should be balanced to the rod they are being fished on. A reel with a smooth drag and large arbor will allow you pick up line quickly and avoid break offs on the large rainbow trout at Northern Lights Lodge. A spare spool or second reel with a sinking line is recommended for streamers.

Fly Lines for Northern Lights Lodge

Lines are crititcal for success at Northern Lights Lodge. Recommended are weight forward floating lines in dull colours that aren't too heavy so they present dry flies well. Richard also recommends bringing a sinking streamer tip line for streamer fishing.

Flies for Northern Lights Lodge

Much of the fishing at Northern Lights is with dry flies, including terrestrial flies like grasshoppers and ants. Packing some streamers as well for bull trout or times when the dries aren't hot is always smart as well!
