Your Southern Ontario Fishing Forecast for March 26th!
Hey everyone, Chris here with your fishing forecast for March 26th! The weather has been fantastic lately, and we’re well into steelhead season now. While trout opener doesn’t arrive until April 26th in many areas, there are still plenty of opportunities to fish for steelhead in extended season zones. Plus, there are some great spots close to the GTA to check out.

Current River Conditions

We’re still seeing the effects of recent melt and rainfall, meaning many of the larger rivers remain high. However, most rivers along the Lake Ontario side are now fishable. Conditions continue to change day by day, and we’re expecting a significant amount of rain later this weekend into Monday. That said, temperatures are staying fairly cool, which should keep runoff at a manageable, slow pace—adding just a bit of color to the rivers, which is actually ideal for fishing.

Best Techniques & Flies

At this time of year, nymphing is one of the most effective ways to catch fish. Water temperatures are still quite cold, so if you’re swinging flies, be sure to slow things down and get deep to reach those fish.

If you’re heading out, egg patterns remain a top choice, especially in high or stained water. Rivers like the Credit, which still have some color, respond well to larger, bolder flies—think chartreuse egg patterns or bright pink worms.

On smaller rivers or those that have cleared up more recently, muted egg patterns in peach tones tend to work best.

Nymphs are another solid option, and their effectiveness varies based on water clarity and conditions. In dirty water, big buggy stoneflies can work really well.As the water clears and warms, smaller nymphs become more effective, especially on pressured rivers. Flies like Bird of Prey, Prince Nymphs, and Pheasant Tails are great choices when conditions settle.
