From the Zone 15 pike opener in Muskoka and Haliburton to dry fly trout fishing, steelhead opportunities, and sight fishing for carp, there is no shortage of options for anglers looking to make the most of the holiday weekend.
Zone 15 Pike Opener Brings Prime Big Fish Opportunities
One of the biggest highlights of the weekend is the opening of northern pike season in Fisheries Management Zone 15. This includes much of Central Ontario, including the Muskoka and Haliburton regions, home to some of the province’s best trophy pike fisheries.
Lakes like Lake of Bays and the Muskoka lakes are known for producing truly large fish, and the timing of opener could not look much better. Warm temperatures and sunny skies should push pike into shallow bays, around docks, and near emerging weed growth.
This is one of the best times of year to target large pike because the fish are concentrated in shallow water and actively feeding. Many of these fish become difficult to locate later in the season as they move offshore into deeper basins.
Best Tactics for Spring Pike Fishing in Ontario
- Focus on shallow bays with warming water
- Look for fish cruising near docks and shoreline structure
- Use baitfish fly patterns or shallow-running presentations
- Take advantage of sunny conditions for sight fishing
If you have access to a cottage or are planning a day trip north, this is the weekend to do it.
Trout Fishing Conditions Look Excellent for the Long Weekend
River conditions across Southern Ontario are lining up very well heading into the weekend. Recent rainfall brought water levels up slightly, but flows will settle back into seasonal ranges before the peak fishing days.
Water temperatures on many rivers have been hovering around 10°C, but forecasted daytime highs between 20°C and 26°C should quickly warm things up and trigger stronger insect activity.
Dry Fly Fishing Could Be Outstanding
Anglers have already been seeing strong Hendrickson hatches, but warmer weather may finally bring additional mayfly species into the mix, including:
- Gray Fox
- Sulphurs
These warmer evenings could create some exceptional dry fly fishing opportunities, especially near sunset when spinner falls occur. During these events, mayflies return to the water surface to lay eggs, often creating some of the most exciting trout fishing of the season. If you are planning to fish rivers this weekend, extending your day into the evening could pay off in a big way.
Nymphing Remains a Reliable Option
While dry fly fishing gets the attention this time of year, nymphing should continue to produce very consistently throughout the weekend.
As insect activity increases, more nymphs become dislodged from rocks in riffles and faster water, making them vulnerable to feeding trout.
Consider fishing:
- Pheasant Tails
- Frenchies
- Small Perdigons
- Other slim mayfly imitations
Focus your efforts around riffles where insects naturally concentrate.
Late Season Steelhead Still Available
Despite being mid-May, there are still steelhead holding in many Ontario tributaries thanks to the cooler spring temperatures and solid water conditions we’ve experienced throughout the month.
An added bonus this time of year is the lack of crowds. Many anglers have shifted focus to other fisheries, leaving plenty of water open for those still chasing chrome.
Swinging Flies for Aggressive Steelhead
This is an excellent time to swing flies for steelhead. Fish are aggressive, actively feeding, and often willing to chase larger presentations.
Swinging streamers and larger flies through classic holding water can be extremely effective.
Carp Fishing Sets Up Perfectly for Warm Weather
Carp anglers should also be excited heading into the long weekend. Many systems across Ontario are entering that ideal pre-spawn period where carp remain active and focused on feeding.
The combination of warming temperatures and bright conditions should push fish into shallow water, creating excellent sight fishing opportunities.
Whether you are fishing from shore or a boat, this is one of the most visual and exciting times of year to target carp on the fly.
