Southern Ontario Steelhead Fishing Forecast - March 18th!
Steelhead season is officially underway, and conditions across Ontario are starting to line up for some excellent early spring fishing.

After a significant warm-up and melt last week, temperatures dropped over the weekend, slowing runoff and giving rivers a chance to settle. As expected, many smaller creeks fished well this past weekend, while larger systems are still coming down from higher flows. The good news is that everything is trending in the right direction.

With stable weather and only light precipitation in the forecast, the upcoming weekend is shaping up to offer some of the best fishing conditions we’ve seen so far this season.

River Conditions: Improving Across the Board

Right now, many larger rivers are still high and carrying some color, but they are steadily clearing. Mid-sized systems—like Credit River—are coming into very good shape soon, potentially even by this weekend depending on how conditions develop.

With temperatures staying cool and seasonal, we’re not expecting another major melt. That means water levels should stabilize, clarity should improve, and fish will continue to move into the systems.

For anglers, this combination of dropping water, light stain, and stable flows is exactly what you want in early steelhead season.

Weather Outlook: Ideal Spring Fishing Conditions

The forecast is calling for moderate temperatures, reaching around 7°C over the weekend, which should make for comfortable days on the water.

Cooler overnight temperatures will help maintain river clarity, while mild daytime highs keep things pleasant without triggering excessive runoff. Overall, this is shaping up to be a very fishable stretch of weather.

How to Fish Cold Spring Water

Even as air temperatures improve, water temperatures remain cold due to ongoing snowmelt. This is a key factor to keep in mind when approaching steelhead early in the season.

Fish will be less aggressive and more energy-conscious, so slowing things down is critical.

Nymphing: Focus on getting your flies deep and drifting naturally. Fish methodically and cover water thoroughly.

Swinging flies: Use heavier sink tips, slow your swing, and take smaller steps between casts to maximize time in the zone.

Patience and precision will consistently outperform speed in these conditions.

Best Fly Patterns for Steelhead Right Now

Fly selection should match water clarity and visibility:

In Stained or Dirty Water:

  • Chartreuse egg patterns
  • Dark, high-contrast flies (black, blue, purple) for swinging
  • Larger, more visible presentations

In Clearer Water:

  • Peach or natural egg patterns
  • Yellow sucker spawn eggs
  • Smaller, more subtle flies like hare's ear nymphs

As rivers continue to clear, expect fish to become more selective, making natural tones increasingly effective.

A Great Window to Get Out

With improving river conditions, stable weather, and active fish moving through the systems, the upcoming weekend is shaping up to be a strong opportunity to get out for steelhead.
