Southern Ontario Fishing Forecast - May 27th!
With stable weather, comfortable temperatures, and active fish across multiple species, anglers have a wide range of excellent opportunities heading into the weekend.

From dry fly trout fishing and shallow water pike to aggressive carp and even late season steelhead, late May continues to deliver outstanding action.

Stable Weather Means Consistent Fishing

One of the biggest factors working in anglers’ favour this week is weather stability. Fish often become less predictable during major weather swings, but this week’s forecast is showing:

  • Consistent temperatures
  • Clear skies
  • Comfortable highs in the high teens to low 20s
  • Minimal weather disruption

That stable pattern should create excellent fishing conditions for a variety of species throughout Southern Ontario.

Dry Fly Fishing Is Prime!

Late May is one of the best times of year for dry fly fishing in Ontario, and conditions are lining up perfectly right now.

One of the most exciting developments this week is the beginning of stonefly activity on many freestone rivers.

Southern Ontario sees several species of stoneflies, including large golden stones that can reach impressive sizes and attract aggressive strikes from larger trout.

Stoneflies are especially effective because:

  • Their nymphs crawl onto rocks before hatching
  • Fish target vulnerable nymphs during emergence
  • Large adults encourage trout to move aggressively to the surface

Unlike some mayfly hatches, stoneflies are often fished more as a searching or prospecting pattern rather than matching dense hatch activity.

Alongside stoneflies, anglers should continue carrying:

  • Hendricksons
  • Gray Foxes
  • Sulphurs
  • Caddis patterns
  • Brown drake (Grand & Saugeen Rivers)
  • Green drakes (Credit River)
  • Isonychia (Saugeen, & Middle Grand)

Most productive mayfly sizes right now range from:

Size 8 for larger drakes and stones
Down to size 14–16 for smaller mayflies and caddis

Having a wide range of natural mayfly and caddis imitations will keep anglers well prepared for changing hatch activity throughout the day.

Nymphing and Streamer Adjustments

Recent rainfall briefly increased flows on many rivers, but conditions are expected to drop back down by the weekend.

As water clears:

  • Smaller nymphs become more effective
  • Natural colours outperform flashy patterns
  • Smaller streamers often fish better during midday conditions

Early mornings and evenings can still reward anglers throwing larger streamers, but during bright daytime conditions downsizing presentations will generally improve success.

Pike Fishing Remains Strong

Pike fishing continues to produce excellent action across Southern Ontario. The prolonged cool spring has helped keep many fish relatively shallow longer than usual, even after some recent warm temperatures.

Right now anglers are finding pike:

  • On shallow flats
  • Along emerging weed edges
  • Near first drop-offs outside bays
  • Around deeper weed beds adjacent to spawning areas

If fish have moved off ultra-shallow water, they usually have not gone far.

Floating lines continue to work well, though sinking lines can help cover slightly deeper structure more effectively. Late May remains one of the best windows of the year for targeting aggressive shallow water pike.

Carp Fishing Continues to Heat Up

Carp fishing has been outstanding and should remain excellent through the upcoming weekend. As water temperatures rise, carp are actively feeding in shallow areas while preparing for spawning activity.

The best areas to target include:

  • Shallow flats
  • Creek mouths
  • Warm shoreline areas
  • Cobble and mud-bottom feeding zones

Successful patterns right now include:

  • Small crayfish flies
  • Leech patterns
  • Weighted nymphs
  • Small baitfish imitations

When targeting carp, look for:

  • Fish with heads down actively feeding
  • Tail-up feeding behaviour
  • Slow-moving fish cruising shallow water

A slow presentation with subtle twitches often produces the best results.

Musky Opener Is Almost Here

Musky season opens across much of Southern Ontario on the first Saturday in June, which is now just around the corner.

Early season musky fishing can offer incredible opportunities for truly large fish. Get your flies tied and plans made, it sneaks up fast!

Final Thoughts

The final weekend of May is offering a little bit of everything for Ontario anglers.

Whether you are:

  • Throwing dry flies to rising trout
  • Prospecting with stoneflies
  • Chasing shallow pike
  • Sight fishing carp
  • Preparing for musky opener

…conditions are setting up extremely well heading into the weekend.

With stable weather and active fish across multiple fisheries, this is an excellent time to get on the water.
