Hey folks, Chris here with your fishing forecast for April 16th—and we’re officially in the final countdown! Trout opener is just 10 days away here in Southern Ontario, and we hope you’re getting geared up and ready to hit the water.
But before the opener, we've got some phenomenal fishing on tap for this weekend.
Current Conditions
The last few days have brought in some really solid reports from across the region. Anglers have been finding great success on the Credit, the Humber, and other Lake Ontario tributaries. There's also some excellent fishing happening up north right now, so no matter where you're headed, it’s shaping up to be a great weekend on the water.
Water temps on the Lake Ontario tribs are sitting right around 10°C, which is prime time for steelhead activity. A lot of fish are beginning to move onto their spawning beds, so if you're heading out, keep an eye out for fish actively spawning on reds—those shallow gravel areas. Please give them space and let them do their thing. The good news? There are still plenty of fish holding in deeper runs and pools, and they’re ready to eat.
Fly Recommendations
We’re expecting a bit of rain into the weekend, but nothing too heavy—so clarity should remain solid. With that, it’s time to start thinking about buggy patterns.
Here’s what we’re reaching for right now:
Egg patterns and worms in lighter colors
Small nymphs like Hare’s Ears, Prince Nymphs, and Stoneflies
Subtle, natural tones will go a long way in these conditions
It’s a great time to start downsizing and fishing those more finesse-style flies, especially with clearer water and more fish holding in deeper water.
