Fly Tying Classes FAQ

Q: What do I learn in a fly tying class?
A: Drift Outfitters’ fly tying classes teach you the fundamentals of tying durable, effective flies for trout, steelhead, and other species. You’ll learn essential techniques like thread control, material handling, proportions, and pattern selection — guided by experienced instructors who tie and fish Ontario waters.

Q: Are classes suitable for beginners?
A: Our introductory classes are perfect for new tiers who want to build a strong foundation. We cover tool use, basic patterns, and how to match flies to local hatches. No experience is necessary, and all materials are provided. Our more advanced classes are listed as such and require previous tying experience.

Q: Do you offer advanced or specialty classes?
A: Yes! Drift Outfitters offers intermediate and advanced sessions focusing on specific techniques or fly types — such as steelhead patterns, streamers, nymphs, or Atlantic salmon flies. These classes help experienced tiers refine their skills and expand their repertoire.

Q: What materials or tools do I need for class?
A: All basic materials are provided for in-person sessions. Tools are included in our introductory lessons but not for our advanced classes.

Q: How do I sign up for a fly tying class?
A: You can register online through our Fly Tying Classes page (https://driftoutfitters.com/) or in-store at Drift Outfitters in Toronto. Space is limited, so early registration is recommended.

Q: Do you offer private or group lessons?
A: Yes. We offer private one-on-one instruction and group sessions for friends, clubs, or corporate events. These custom classes can be tailored to your skill level, interests, and schedule.
