Top Ontario Guide Flies
Knowledge is earned over time on the water. We sat down with local fly fishing guide Ian Troup to learn to tie some of his favourite flies for guiding on local rivers for trout and steelhead. These are not only incredibly effective flies, but as you'll see, quite simple to tie flies too!
Pink Bead Hare's Ear
To kick off our top 5 guide flies we have the pink bead hare's ear, this has been one of our top flies everywhere we've fished it for trout! The pink colour of the metallic bead actually tends to be quite subtle under water, giving off just the right amount of flash.
Recipe:
Hanak 230 or 450 - size 14-16
Lt Pink Slotted Tungsten Bead - 2.5 - 4.0mm
12/0 Black Veevus Thread
Coq De Leon
Small Silver Wire
Hare's Ear Plus Dubbing - Natural
CDC - Natural
Zap a Gap
Ian's Sexy Zebra Midge
The second fly in our series is Ian's sexy zebra midge, a riff on classic tag flies which he was introduced to in Ireland. This is a great fly for fishing slightly stained or off colour water.
Materials:
Hare's Ear CDC Caddis
We would boldly say this might be the only caddis dry that you'll ever need! Feel free to add tags, hotspots, or an elk hair overwing to increase buoyancy.
Materials:
Plume Tip
The plume tip was invented by Jeremy Lucas and is an amazing fly! This is a great option for picky fish that are softly sipping.
Materials:
14/0 Veevus Thread - Black
Pheasant Tail - Brown
CDC - Natural
