Fishing Conditions & Tips

Last weekend delivered phenomenal fishing. We covered areas both north and south, and fish were active everywhere. The rain helped significantly, providing excellent conditions and perfect temperatures for steelhead.

Looking ahead, this weekend’s weather will cool down, with temperatures hovering near freezing. Don’t let the chill discourage you—fishing conditions will still be fantastic. Ice and slush haven’t become a concern yet, but as temperatures drop further, time is running out to take advantage of this prime steelhead season. Most rivers are in great shape, with fish plentiful across the board.

Fly Selection:

• Winter colors: Black, purple, pink, and other vibrant shades tend to perform well in these low-light conditions.
• Nymphs: Worm and stonefly patterns are particularly effective as the water gets colder. Pair these with your usual egg patterns for the best results.

Water Strategy:

With cooler temperatures, fish are gravitating toward the slower sections of rivers. Focus on:

• Tailouts and the backs of pools
• Softer, slower-moving water, where fish feel more comfortable. While fresh fish may still hold at the heads of pools, most fish will begin settling into these slower areas.
