Fishing Forecast for December 11th!

Hi, it’s Chris here with your weekly fishing forecast. Take advantage of the lighter city traffic and get your shopping done stress-free!

Now, onto the forecast. The good news is that fishing is shaping up nicely for this weekend, with plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy the rivers. Let’s break it down.

Weather and River Conditions

Last week brought some bitterly cold temperatures, leaving some northern rivers—like those near Georgian Bay and the Lake Huron pretty iced up. If you’re local to those areas, you might find open patches of water, but long drives may not be worth it as your fishing options will be limited.

On the Lake Ontario shoreline, however, conditions are looking much better. Recent warm temperatures and rain melted a lot of snow and ice, bringing river levels up earlier this week. While some rivers were slightly stained, the outlook for the weekend is promising, with pleasant seasonal temperatures and a bit more rain expected to move fish around.

As always, exercise caution when winter fishing. Ice flows and cold water can be hazardous, so stay mindful of conditions both on the river and the roads as you travel.

Fishing Tips and Tactics

  1. Nymphing and Centerpinning

    • Egg Patterns: This the time of year fish washed-out colors. Whites, creams, and light pinks tend to produce very well in cold water.
    • Worms: A fantastic cold-water option. They create vibrations that attract attention and are hard for fish to resist.
  2. Swinging Flies

    • Clear Water Conditions: Opt for sculpin patterns on a heavy sink tip. Get your fly down low and in the fish’s face—it’s a proven tactic to trigger strikes in clear water.
    • Higher Water Conditions: Use flies in contrasting colors like black, blue, purple, or pink. These bold colours stand out and perform well in stained water.

Final Thoughts

With milder temperatures and a touch of rain this weekend, there are plenty of fish to be had for those who brave the winter conditions. As always, if you need advice on where to fish or what to use, feel free to reach out—we’re happy to help.

Good luck out there, and happy fishing!
