Why Tracking is Worth a Look!

There several core principals of fly casting, however what if we told you that one of the most key ones is also one of the least looked at? Tracking issues (not keeping the rod in a straight path while casting) can lead to tailing loops, misdirected casts, collapsed casts, and many more issues.

When casting, if you notice that the leader seems to be unrolling to the side in a sort of twisted way, theres a good chance it's tracking related. Sometimes its evident in a wave of slack line you may notice while casting as well.

The best course correction if you notice this happening to you is to watch your reel! If you're twisting out, you'll see the reel start to face outwards during the cast. By watching the direction of the reel, you'll be able to see if you are casting straight back and forwards or if the rod is being twisted.
