Top 5 Flies for Beginner Fly Tyers


Starting to tie flies is an exciting time, but it can also be an intimidating one. In this new mini series we're bringing you 5 of our top picks for patterns that a beginner fly tyer should take a stab at. We've chosen these flies for three factors - being easy to tie, requiring minimal materials, and of course, their fishiness!

Marabou Leech


To kick off our top 5 flies for beginner fly tyers series we have the marabou leech. This is a super easy to tie fly that produces!

Caddis Larva

The second fly in our "Top 5 Flies for Beginner Fly Tyers" series, is a simple caddis larva. We're tying a big version here but you can easily scale this down to very small sizes, locally the most common caddis sizes will range from 14-18.

San Juan Worm

What fish doesn't love a worm?! To continue our "Top 5 Flies for Beginner Fly Tyers" series we have the San Juan Worm, a staple in any trout or steelhead angler's box.

Puke Fly

To continue our series, we have an Ontario classic, The Puke Fly! This fly was designed by Ian Colin James to imitate a "puked up" dead baitfish which smallmouth often cough up while in a feeding frenzy. These coughed up baitfish often get eaten up by other schooling fish. This fly also works great for other species including trout, steelhead, walleye, carp and even pike! Feel free to tie it in other colours too, though white seems to be best.

To cap off our series we have the Woolly Bugger, it"s a staple in any anglers box, it covers a myriad of different food sources and can be tailored to almost any need.
