Fishing Forecast for May 15th
It's starting to feel like summer out there! Warm weather has arrived, remember to pack the sunscreen and water because you're going to want to soak up the weather for a full day!
This week the fishing noticibly changed patterns as we kicked into bug mode for trout - simply, water is clearer, fish are sitting in pocketwater, and many species of bugs are on the menu now. Pike fishing has been incredible as well, with big numbers of fish, and very large fish not being uncommon. We're also seeing carp roll into the shallows of our lakes, this can be some of the best carp sightfishing of the year for a wading angler!
Make sure to check out the "Hot Flies" section below to set yourself up for success!

Trout Forecast
Trout fishing continues to be very good across the board! Many different hatches are now available on various rivers including sulphurs and caddis! The Grand River is heating up too, with many large fish now being caught.

On many rivers grey fox and stonefly nymphs are becoming more active as they prepare to hatch, consider fishing nymphs like prince nymphs and pheasant tails in size 10-14 to imitate these. Streamer fishing continues to be productive, especially on less pressured fish if you get away from the crowds, as water hits the high 50's (mid teens Celsius), fish will become more active still and be willing to eat larger streamers, especially post rain.
Pike Forecast
May is prime time to get out for these big, toothy fish. We're getting lots of reports of sizable fish being caught, as well as high numbers of fish hitting the boat! In larger, colder lakes (great lakes and larger inland lakes), fish can be found near shore and in shallow water under 10' for the most part, sometimes even sight fished!

On warmer, smaller lakes, look for water from 8-15' deep with weed cover where these fish will move to as they leave the very shallow water. Here, stripping 4-6" flies like bunny leeches and ep baitfish is a great way to go!
Carp Forecast
Water is getting warm enough that carp are now moving into shallower water on many lakes and river mouths. This is the perfect time of year to put on the waders and sight fish these hard fighting fish!
The Great Lakes offer tremendous carp opportunities, offering the chance at fish over 30lbs sight fished in just a couple feet of water! Look for warmer water areas like protected bays and river mouths where these fish will come in to eat. Small leech and crayfish patterns are perfect, try to get close to feeding fish and delicately present the fly close to them, then hold on!
