Fishing Forecast for October 23rd!
It's Chris here with your fishing forecast for October 23rd, as we head into the last weekend of the month. We have some great stuff going on, and yes, the steelhead are around! There’s a bit of a rumor floating around that because the water has been fairly low, there aren’t many fish. I can tell you several of our staff members have been out on the rivers over the last couple of weeks, and we've put a number of fish in the net. So, don’t wait around for fish to show—they’re already out there waiting for you! And what’s better than fishing in t-shirt weather in October?
If you’re heading out, there are a few things to keep in mind. The water is clear right now, so downsizing your tippet is a great idea, especially if you’re nymphing. Instead of your standard 2x or 3x, consider dropping down to 4x or even 5x tippet. It’ll help convert more bites. Also, downsize your flies. We’ve had great success with small egg patterns like the Rio Surreal Eggs and smaller nymphs like epoxy-back copper nymphs—both are excellent options for lower, clearer water.
If you’re looking for other opportunities this week, we’ve had reports of amazing smallmouth bass fishing. As we get closer to the colder months, those bigger smallmouth start feeding really actively. They often occupy the same rivers that we fish steelhead in, so it’s a great time to bring a couple of different fly boxes and try for both. You can catch some really big fish at this time of year.
Trout fishing continues to be good, too. If you want to head up north to the Muskoka or Haliburton areas to some of those trout lakes, you can find brook trout, rainbow trout, and even brown trout. It’s perfect weather for it! If you prefer river fishing, we still have some resident trout fisheries open this time of year within an easy drive of Toronto. Feel free to get in touch with us for more info—we’d be happy to share some tips.
We also received feedback from the survey we put out a couple of weeks ago. A common request was for more information about access points. While it can be tricky to provide specific locations that suit everyone’s needs, we’re always here to help. Give us a call, and we’ll do our best to help you find success this weekend.
As always, we hope this forecast helps you out, and we’ll see you on the water!
