Catching Mid-Winter Steelhead!

- By The Drift Team
Mid winter thaws mean great fishing to be had! As snow melts, rivers rise, and with that added water comes fish screaming up river. Early mornings will offer the clearest water with more snow melt feeding the rivers as the days warm. Target medium to slow water as fish are most likely to sit there, conserving energy.
NYMPHING
To catch these fish nymphing, we reach for bright eggs, large stoneflies, and pink worms when the water is up. When the water does drop and clears, we tone down our offerings, going to more muted eggs and smaller nymphs. Check out our favourite nymph rig below!

Swinging
To catch these fish swinging, we reach for brighter and heavier flies in higher water, and more muted baitfish patterns as water clears. Fish medium to slow paced water and try to get your fly swinging slowly. Sink Tips like Airflo Poly leaders help you get down and slow down your swing, simply loop them on as you would a leader. Check out a great simple swinging rig below!
